Emissions Lab Hardware Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Emissions Lab Hardware Engineer to support and troubleshoot emissions testing systems, including analytical benches, secondary sampling equipment, and chassis dynamometers.


This role will take ownership of troubleshooting efforts before, during , and after testing; perform quality control and calibration activities; analyze test data for compliance; and collaborate closely with technicians by providing technical guidance during equipment repair and maintenance.


The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on hardware experience, analytical thinking, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for emissions analytical benches, secondary sampling systems, and chassis dynamometers to resolve hardware, software, and system-level issues
  • Diagnose root causes of test anomalies before, during, and after emissions testing
  • Support setup, execution, and monitoring of emissions tests to ensure adherence to procedures and standards
  • Perform quality control checks, calibrations, verifications, and audits of emissions measurement and sampling equipment
  • Analyze emissions test data to validate results, identify trends, and investigate abnormalities
  • Ensure proper operation of sample handling systems, including heated lines, filters, pumps, valves, and flow control devices
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting support to technicians performing equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Collaborate with technicians to identify repair strategies, validate corrective actions, and return equipment to service
  • Document calibrations, quality checks, root cause analyses, corrective actions, and test results in accordance with ISO 17025 standards
  • Support continuous improvement of test methods, equipment reliability, and data quality
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, internal procedures, and regulatory requirements


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Automotive, or related field) or equivalent experience
  • Hand-on experience with troubleshooting emissions analytical benches and secondary sampling systems
  • Experience working with chassis dynamometers
  • Strong understanding of emissions testing principles, sampling methodologies, and measurement systems
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues with minimal supervision
  • Experience analyzing emissions/test data for compliance and root cause analysis
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems and test software
  • Ability to work effectively in a unionized or structured technical environment
  • Strong problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation diagrams


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with regulated emissions testing cycles (e.g., FTP, WLTP, USO6, RDE)
  • Knowledge of emissions regulations (EPA, CARB, EU) and audit processes
  • Experience with secondary dilution tunnels, bag sampling, PM/PN sampling, or similar systems
  • Experience supporting maintenance and repair activities alongside technicians
  • Background in automation, controls, instrumentation, or lab hardware integration
  • Experience in automotive, powertrain, or emissions testing environments
  • Experience with emissions analyzers, instrumentation calibration, and motor/control systems


Work Environment

  • Laboratory and test cell environment
  • Hands-on role working directly with testing equipment and technicians
  • May require flexible hours, including occasional weekend support based on testing schedules
  • Fully onsite position
  • No travel required
